It's probably safe to say this dreadful weather has taken a handsome toll on all of us, but luckily, there is a cure for what ails. With dates being unveiled at the same speed of the falling… snain (or whatever that “wintry mix” of snow and rain is), the Greater Boston concert scene is picking up momentum, and not a second too soon. From marquee staples the likes of Rihanna, Sade & John Legend, Rod Stewart & Stevie Nicks, and Bon Jovi, to less famous powerhouses such as Ellie Goulding, Further, and Providence-based indie rockers The Low Anthem besieging local stages, Boston will be swaying and flicking those red socks-embossed lighters well through the sticky dog days of summer.

“We are Banana Phonetic, we write music for the love of sound."

With such a simple concept, this four-man band's bio begins, but their music proves that they are anything but simple. For starters, their debut EP, “The Western End”, achieves something that not many artists and bands are these days: no two songs resemble. In an age of limited (musical) creativity and abundant recycling, the varied range of Banana's sound is laudable and refreshing. Each of the five tracks showcases quite clearly the parts of the band's whole, yet neither the vocals nor the instruments stand so distinctly that they compromise the sound's cohesion.

In the world of rock and roll music, there is a very thin line that separates what is considered to be cool versus what is uncool. As a non-musician, cool is generally defined as free tickets, backstage passes and/or after-parties with the bands. But for most bands and most tours, the after-parties are not as exciting as many may think. They're not parties at all. They are simply small gatherings of normal, tired people, who are trying to unwind, pack up and move on to the next stop. Sure, occasionally most rock-stars must throw a pretty big banger for their friends and to keep the buzz around the name, but that's simply not an affordable or healthy day-to-day lifestyle. Further, the coolness of an invite to these uneventful after-parties can actually be a bit awkward. If you don't know the people you're hanging out with and they don't know you well enough to know why you're in the room, you probably shouldn't be there.

Seriously, I often have heard people joke that I attend more shows than anyone else they know that isn't actually out on tour, but I think this winter I will be surpassing even my own records. Between this weekend and New Year's Eve I plan to attend every single one of the following shows, as well as whatever comes up and is appealing at the time/has not yet been officially announced.
