It might be a disease. Whether in the theater, surrounded by a spellbound audience or in my living room watching the characters of ABC's latest drama dash across my television, I'm never quite consumed by the plot. Always, always I am more tuned in to what's going on behind the scenes: soundtracks reel me in. While those around me channel laser-like focus on dialogue, character interaction, and hidden symbolism, I am busy jotting down lyrical snippets on my BlackBerry to explore later.

Okay, fine: maybe all of Review Artists' readers knew of Bon Iver, but God knows prior to listening to Kanye West's "Lost In The World", I didn't. And I'm willing to bet that a sizable number of those listeners holding the million plus sold copies of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy didn't know who he was either. Or Aphex Twin, or Mike Oldfield, or King Crimson, or…or…: the list goes on.

There's something to be said about the decisions that Kanye West makes: sometimes misguided, often unpredictable, always the mark of a creative genius. And in the case of his inclination to work with and sample certain artists? The latter two. West has an uncanny knack for (strategic? purely impulsive?) collaboration.

I recently discovered Florence and The Machine, and to say that I like them is an understatement. I've been waking up to them, passing out to them, shredding mail to them. At the top of my “on loop” list is “Cosmic Love”. With over 3.5 million YouTube views—third only to their most recognizable tune “Dog Days Are Over”—it went from somewhere in the middle of YouTube's playlist, to the very top of mine. The song's drama hits full throttle in the first 30 seconds; the lyrics are poignant and substantial (no grenade-catching here); the drum line is strong and powerful: for a true music-lover, it's just an objectively beautiful song.

But what really makes the song so good, so stunning, is lead singer Florence Welsh's voice. The young English crooner opens her mouth, and from it wafts something that sounds like a mix of the coldest day in January, the view from Fuji's summit, a first-time mother's very first lullaby. It is crisp, majestic and unimaginably pure. If ever the word “ethereal” could be applied to something—and actually mean something—it fits right in a sentence after the words “Florence Welsh's voice is __________”.

A week from tomorrow (Wednesday) I will be leaving to visit Texas for the first time in my life. Originally, I had planned on driving down and checking out Nashville and Memphis on the way but I couldn't find anyone to make the drive with me. Instead of making the drive alone I just decided to book a flight. It works out for the better because now i'll be able to spend more time and enjoy myself. A fellow engineer and music enthusiast who I went to school with, resides in Corpus Christi. He is currently very into the hip hop culture and I look forward to checking out his recording setup, some of the songs he has been working on, and meeting some of the guys he collaborates with.

Well he use to go by the stage name MC Hammer. Yes that's right MC Hammer, now King Hammer, has released a song dissing Jay-Z. The reason, well he took offense to Kanye West G.O.O.D.
