I recently discovered Florence and The Machine, and to say that I like them is an understatement. I've been waking up to them, passing out to them, shredding mail to them. At the top of my “on loop” list is “Cosmic Love”. With over 3.5 million YouTube views—third only to their most recognizable tune “Dog Days Are Over”—it went from somewhere in the middle of YouTube's playlist, to the very top of mine. The song's drama hits full throttle in the first 30 seconds; the lyrics are poignant and substantial (no grenade-catching here); the drum line is strong and powerful: for a true music-lover, it's just an objectively beautiful song.

But what really makes the song so good, so stunning, is lead singer Florence Welsh's voice. The young English crooner opens her mouth, and from it wafts something that sounds like a mix of the coldest day in January, the view from Fuji's summit, a first-time mother's very first lullaby. It is crisp, majestic and unimaginably pure. If ever the word “ethereal” could be applied to something—and actually mean something—it fits right in a sentence after the words “Florence Welsh's voice is __________”.

After reading this article, Mike Rigg's Watermarks Break My Heart: Journalists hate them; labels love them. Why copyright protections aren't going away," I couldn't help but continue thinking about water-marked music intended for promotional use. This issue is one that I have encountered many times and still encounter quite often. Promotional materials made for promotional use, in fact, don't make for fantastic promotion because they are simply annoying and frustrating to listen to. The reason for this is to prevent leaking, to stop journalists from potentially releasing the material to the public for free prior to its official release date for purchase.

Here, musicians face a double-edged sword as they rely on the publicity journalists provide them as a crucial part of their promotional process, yet they run the risk of journalists sharing the material. Watermarks were not the quick-fix that the record labels have hoped for, though. For some, they are enough of an exciting sneak-peak that they are willing to let it play through the voice-over interruptions: "This is a promotional copy."
