It's probably safe to say this dreadful weather has taken a handsome toll on all of us, but luckily, there is a cure for what ails. With dates being unveiled at the same speed of the falling… snain (or whatever that “wintry mix” of snow and rain is), the Greater Boston concert scene is picking up momentum, and not a second too soon. From marquee staples the likes of Rihanna, Sade & John Legend, Rod Stewart & Stevie Nicks, and Bon Jovi, to less famous powerhouses such as Ellie Goulding, Further, and Providence-based indie rockers The Low Anthem besieging local stages, Boston will be swaying and flicking those red socks-embossed lighters well through the sticky dog days of summer.

“We are Banana Phonetic, we write music for the love of sound."

With such a simple concept, this four-man band's bio begins, but their music proves that they are anything but simple. For starters, their debut EP, “The Western End”, achieves something that not many artists and bands are these days: no two songs resemble. In an age of limited (musical) creativity and abundant recycling, the varied range of Banana's sound is laudable and refreshing. Each of the five tracks showcases quite clearly the parts of the band's whole, yet neither the vocals nor the instruments stand so distinctly that they compromise the sound's cohesion.

In the world of rock and roll music, there is a very thin line that separates what is considered to be cool versus what is uncool. As a non-musician, cool is generally defined as free tickets, backstage passes and/or after-parties with the bands. But for most bands and most tours, the after-parties are not as exciting as many may think. They're not parties at all. They are simply small gatherings of normal, tired people, who are trying to unwind, pack up and move on to the next stop. Sure, occasionally most rock-stars must throw a pretty big banger for their friends and to keep the buzz around the name, but that's simply not an affordable or healthy day-to-day lifestyle. Further, the coolness of an invite to these uneventful after-parties can actually be a bit awkward. If you don't know the people you're hanging out with and they don't know you well enough to know why you're in the room, you probably shouldn't be there.

I am both thrilled and anxious due to the openness of this information, as the Warped Tour has always played a significant role in my summer plan scheduling process. I am currently one of many hopefuls waiting to hear back regarding the position of Monster Energy's Pit Reporter for the summer tour, as the girl who filled the position for the last two years has moved on and the tour recently held an open application process.

This weekend for the first time I ever, I understood the extreme disappointment that a band must face each and every time they are forced to cancel a show (or multiple shows) due to an illness one (or more) of the band members is being treated for. Throughout my entire life, I have always caught a cold with the changing of the seasons, but this last week, I was so sick with a combination of an acute sinus infection and bronchitis that I was bedridden for three full days and still resting for a couple of days after the fact. Despite the normal setbacks one always faces after coming down with an illness: lost time at work, missing classes and unattended social engagements, I would have been perfectly content being stuck in bed over the weekend, had there not been so many incredible tours rolling through the state of New Jersey right at the same time.

So this weekend I broke my self-imposed exile from all thing Lakeman, leaving London for Birmingham and the final gig on this seated mini-tour.

Normally, I object to a seated Seth concert, it seems counterproductive to sit people neatly in rows when all the music is telling you to do is jump around like a fool and stomp to the beat - but I'll get to that later. Having said that, I'm not sure if it was the time I've had off from following their Big Blue Bus up and down the country, or whether the seats allowed me to focus more on the music and less on not being jostled by tweenagers, but wow the boy can sing!!

Both well-recognized for their song-writing skills (although generally differing approaches) , Kevin Devine and Andy Hull make for a great team of lyrical genius and beautiful harmonies. In full the band is comprised of six members: Kevin Devine, Andy Hull (both on lead vocals, guitar and piano, although Devine took to the drum kit at one point during the live performance as well), Robert McDowell (lead guitar and back up vocals), Chris Freeman (keyboard and back up vocals--and a bit of cowbell during the live show), Jonathan Corley (bass), and Ben Homola (drums). The band formed in early 2010 and released their first full-length, a self-titled album, this week.

I'm going to take a break from the Postcards blogs this week and tell you about my outing last Thursday night. Does the name Tony Clifton mean anything to you? If it doesn't, let me give you some insight. Tony Clifton was comedian Andy Kaufman's foul mouthed, womanizing, boozing, lounge singing alter ego. Often, Clifton was played by other people such as Bob Zmuda to keep audiences believing that Tony was a real person. Even when Andy died in 1984, Tony Clifton's character continued to live on.

Seriously, I often have heard people joke that I attend more shows than anyone else they know that isn't actually out on tour, but I think this winter I will be surpassing even my own records. Between this weekend and New Year's Eve I plan to attend every single one of the following shows, as well as whatever comes up and is appealing at the time/has not yet been officially announced.
