The story of Orpheus and Euridice is a timeles tale of love, betrayal, heartache and doubt. On Tuesday it became a post apocalyptic musical thanks to Anais Mitchell's Hadestown. In the gothic surrounds of Union Chapel, 15 of the biggest names on the British Folk Scene brought the characters of Greek mythology to life.

Jim Moray and Anais Mitchell took the central roles of Orpheus and Euridice respectively - regular readers of this blog will know that I really rate the latter, but while seeing him in the central role may have initially swayed me to buy a ticket, the combination of Jim Causley as Hermes, Thea Gilmore as Persephone, Martin Carthy as Hades and Jackie Levene as the narrator, made the evening complete.

Happy New Year!

This year, I once again spent NYE at the Southbank Centre for a spot of Bellowhedonism. Just like last year, it was a fabulous celebration of all things folk – both traditional and modern – and the perfect way to draw a line under 2010. Viva 2011.

This week Glastonbury's Emerging Talent Competition opened for applications, so as I type unsigned and emerging acts around the country are likely to be beavering away, finding their best demos to wow the organisers at the UKs biggest music festival. The contest offers unsigned bands from the UK or Ireland the chance to compete for one of 12 Main Stage spots at this years festival - a massive boost to anyone's career.

Since starting to blog for Review Artists last July, I've made no attempt to hide my love for live music. And while I have had to cut down on my gig going now I'm no longer a student, I still make a concerted effort to go to as many live music events as possible.

Last month, however, I observed how audiences around the world engaged with the Frank Zappa #zappafest celebrations at the Roundhouse, via the web. With web technology improving all the time, it is now possible to provide all the atmosphere and sound quality of the live performance online with the added bonus of a few home comforts. As @Blueysays so eloquently put it at the beginning of November 'nobody can spill beer over me on the internet'.

Just in time for Thanksgiving, the dates for the 2011 Vans Warped Tour have been released. I am both thrilled and anxious due to the openness of this information, as the Warped Tour has always played a significant role in my summer plan scheduling process. I am currently one of many hopefuls waiting to hear back regarding the position of Monster Energy's Pit Reporter for the summer tour, as the girl who filled the position for the last two years has moved on and the tour recently held an open application process.

So this weekend I broke my self-imposed exile from all thing Lakeman, leaving London for Birmingham and the final gig on this seated mini-tour.

Normally, I object to a seated Seth concert, it seems counterproductive to sit people neatly in rows when all the music is telling you to do is jump around like a fool and stomp to the beat - but I'll get to that later. Having said that, I'm not sure if it was the time I've had off from following their Big Blue Bus up and down the country, or whether the seats allowed me to focus more on the music and less on not being jostled by tweenagers, but wow the boy can sing!!

Seriously, I often have heard people joke that I attend more shows than anyone else they know that isn't actually out on tour, but I think this winter I will be surpassing even my own records. Between this weekend and New Year's Eve I plan to attend every single one of the following shows, as well as whatever comes up and is appealing at the time/has not yet been officially announced.
