This past Friday, February 18, I caught a show at The Vera Project in Seattle, an all ages venue in Seattle Center. It was definitely an experience. When we were looking for venues, it didn't occur to us that "all-ages" also meant no bar and a crowd of almost all early college and high schoolers with parents in the back waiting for the concert to be over so they could pick up their kids.

Despite the new venue experience, we were pleasantly surprised by the whole night. The venue was picked purely on Myspace samples of Us On Roofs and Land Of Pines, leaving us with the thought of, "yeah, we could spend an evening listening to that". Both are underage bands with ties to the Experience Music Project Sound Off! battle of the bands. The whole night was a refreshing confirmation that young bands are not to be ignored.

The story of Orpheus and Euridice is a timeles tale of love, betrayal, heartache and doubt. On Tuesday it became a post apocalyptic musical thanks to Anais Mitchell's Hadestown. In the gothic surrounds of Union Chapel, 15 of the biggest names on the British Folk Scene brought the characters of Greek mythology to life.

Jim Moray and Anais Mitchell took the central roles of Orpheus and Euridice respectively - regular readers of this blog will know that I really rate the latter, but while seeing him in the central role may have initially swayed me to buy a ticket, the combination of Jim Causley as Hermes, Thea Gilmore as Persephone, Martin Carthy as Hades and Jackie Levene as the narrator, made the evening complete.

Sameer Gadhia on Boston weather:
"So we're from Southern California...it's really nice over there...but this place builds character!"

On January 18, Bostonians trekked out through the slush and rain to watch Young the Giant with The Static Jacks play a sold out show at the Great Scott.

The Static Jacks hail from Westfield, New Jersey and consist of Ian Devaney on vocals, Henry Kaye on guitar, Michael Sue-Poi on guitar, Spencer Kimmins on bass, and Nick Brennen on drums. Their set was full of punk rock energy and complete with sing-along sign props. Just the type of stuff that makes you want to do some serious bounce-almost-turned-mosh-pit dancing to those hiccupy drum beats. Stand out tracks from their EP Laces include "Who are the Replacements" and "My Parents Lied". You can also download "Into the Sun" for free off of their website.

The night before I left for Barcelona, I saw Freelance Whales and Miniature Tigers play at the Middle East Downstairs. Interestingly enough, while Freelance Whales was the headliner and has already been featured on NPR, it was Miniature Tigers that my friend had wanted to see.

I could see why. Their songs were a mix of bouncy and dreamy, sometimes separately, sometimes not. Charlie Brand's vocals were effortless amidst the pick of acoustic and/or electric guitars, keyboard and distortions. Check out "Coyote Enchantment", "Rock and Roll Mountain Troll", and "Gold Skull" by them. I've included a fan video of "Gold Skull" that was shot at another concert. It captures beautifully exactly what happened at that concert, at the one I saw, and what must happen at every Miniature Tiger show. Perfect. For more Miniature Tigers goodness, download Truffles, their album of covers, for free from here.

In the world of rock and roll music, there is a very thin line that separates what is considered to be cool versus what is uncool. As a non-musician, cool is generally defined as free tickets, backstage passes and/or after-parties with the bands. But for most bands and most tours, the after-parties are not as exciting as many may think. They're not parties at all. They are simply small gatherings of normal, tired people, who are trying to unwind, pack up and move on to the next stop. Sure, occasionally most rock-stars must throw a pretty big banger for their friends and to keep the buzz around the name, but that's simply not an affordable or healthy day-to-day lifestyle. Further, the coolness of an invite to these uneventful after-parties can actually be a bit awkward. If you don't know the people you're hanging out with and they don't know you well enough to know why you're in the room, you probably shouldn't be there.

Since starting to blog for Review Artists last July, I've made no attempt to hide my love for live music. And while I have had to cut down on my gig going now I'm no longer a student, I still make a concerted effort to go to as many live music events as possible.

Last month, however, I observed how audiences around the world engaged with the Frank Zappa #zappafest celebrations at the Roundhouse, via the web. With web technology improving all the time, it is now possible to provide all the atmosphere and sound quality of the live performance online with the added bonus of a few home comforts. As @Blueysays so eloquently put it at the beginning of November 'nobody can spill beer over me on the internet'.

Well here's a reason why you should listen to the new album before seeing the concert.

I'll admit I had not listened to The Age of Adz so I had no clue what I was in for. I had assumed Sufjan Stevens would've been on the guitar with an epic orchestra behind him. So I did actually get what I was looking for. What I wasn't expecting were the glow in the dark neon '80s space outfits with blinking lights and choreographed backup singers. And not to dissapoint, Sufjan broke out the choreographed dance moves as well.

He called his latest album an experiment with sound. So he left behind the instruments to experiment with sound from synthesizers, drum machines, auto-tune, what have you. He also accredited a lot of his musical inspiration to Royal Robertson, the artist behind the album cover and insert. Robertson was an artist, prophet, and schizophrenic who would use his art as an outlet for his visions and dreams. Sufjan said he felt a connection to this artist as he was having trouble trying to work around and define his experiment with sound.
