In the world of rock and roll music, there is a very thin line that separates what is considered to be cool versus what is uncool. As a non-musician, cool is generally defined as free tickets, backstage passes and/or after-parties with the bands. But for most bands and most tours, the after-parties are not as exciting as many may think. They're not parties at all. They are simply small gatherings of normal, tired people, who are trying to unwind, pack up and move on to the next stop. Sure, occasionally most rock-stars must throw a pretty big banger for their friends and to keep the buzz around the name, but that's simply not an affordable or healthy day-to-day lifestyle. Further, the coolness of an invite to these uneventful after-parties can actually be a bit awkward. If you don't know the people you're hanging out with and they don't know you well enough to know why you're in the room, you probably shouldn't be there.

Just in time for Thanksgiving, the dates for the 2011 Vans Warped Tour have been released. I am both thrilled and anxious due to the openness of this information, as the Warped Tour has always played a significant role in my summer plan scheduling process. I am currently one of many hopefuls waiting to hear back regarding the position of Monster Energy's Pit Reporter for the summer tour, as the girl who filled the position for the last two years has moved on and the tour recently held an open application process.

After reading this article, Mike Rigg's Watermarks Break My Heart: Journalists hate them; labels love them. Why copyright protections aren't going away," I couldn't help but continue thinking about water-marked music intended for promotional use. This issue is one that I have encountered many times and still encounter quite often. Promotional materials made for promotional use, in fact, don't make for fantastic promotion because they are simply annoying and frustrating to listen to. The reason for this is to prevent leaking, to stop journalists from potentially releasing the material to the public for free prior to its official release date for purchase.

Here, musicians face a double-edged sword as they rely on the publicity journalists provide them as a crucial part of their promotional process, yet they run the risk of journalists sharing the material. Watermarks were not the quick-fix that the record labels have hoped for, though. For some, they are enough of an exciting sneak-peak that they are willing to let it play through the voice-over interruptions: "This is a promotional copy."

This weekend for the first time I ever, I understood the extreme disappointment that a band must face each and every time they are forced to cancel a show (or multiple shows) due to an illness one (or more) of the band members is being treated for. Throughout my entire life, I have always caught a cold with the changing of the seasons, but this last week, I was so sick with a combination of an acute sinus infection and bronchitis that I was bedridden for three full days and still resting for a couple of days after the fact. Despite the normal setbacks one always faces after coming down with an illness: lost time at work, missing classes and unattended social engagements, I would have been perfectly content being stuck in bed over the weekend, had there not been so many incredible tours rolling through the state of New Jersey right at the same time.

I'd like to take a moment to formerly introduce Bad Books, the lovechild of Brooklyn boy Kevin Devine and Georgia's Manchester Orchestra. Both well-recognized for their song-writing skills (although generally differing approaches) , Kevin Devine and Andy Hull make for a great team of lyrical genius and beautiful harmonies. In full the band is comprised of six members: Kevin Devine, Andy Hull (both on lead vocals, guitar and piano, although Devine took to the drum kit at one point during the live performance as well), Robert McDowell (lead guitar and back up vocals), Chris Freeman (keyboard and back up vocals--and a bit of cowbell during the live show), Jonathan Corley (bass), and Ben Homola (drums). The band formed in early 2010 and released their first full-length, a self-titled album, this week.

Seriously, I often have heard people joke that I attend more shows than anyone else they know that isn't actually out on tour, but I think this winter I will be surpassing even my own records. Between this weekend and New Year's Eve I plan to attend every single one of the following shows, as well as whatever comes up and is appealing at the time/has not yet been officially announced.
