Michael Franti & Spearhead: All Rebel Rockers

All Rebel Rockers by Michael Franti & Spearhead was released on September 9, 2008, by Epitaph subsidiary ANTI-. So why am I writing about a record which came out about a year and a half ago. I know, old news right? Well honestly this one flew under my radar for so long that I only picked it up after I heard the single “Say Hey (I Love You)” on the radio.

Well the single is a far sample of the rest of the album. Now reggae is not my forte when it comes to music. My reggae AllRebelRockerscollection is dominated by Bob Marley. Todays Reggae artists just come across more like hip-hop/Spanish reggae than anything else, and let’s face it that is not beach music. Think about it Sean Paul.

The Opening track “Rude Boys Back In Town” is actually a big of a let down. It just isn’t a song I would want to start an album with, it is a little boring and the rhyme is very repetitive. The second track “A Little Bit Of Riddim” is where the album should have started. This track just makes you want to get up and dance, it is catchy and poppy and could easily be the next single. It is the kind of track that you just bob your head to as you are driving around town in your car. My favorite track by far is “Nobody Right, Nobody Wrong.” The track deals with the idea of world peace, which makes me think back to Bob Marley’s song catalog, and how he often wrote about happiness and peace. If fact a lot of these songs are about peace, love and happiness.

Overall my impression of this album is that it is something I would go to get myself excited for summer and the beach. It just sounds like the album came riding in on the waves of the ocean and was meant to be listened to at the beach. Pick this album up if you enjoy Bob Marley, Xavier Rudd or Spoon.
