Record a Cover Song

by Mike on January 26, 2010

Cover songs are the most popular and notable songs to recognize and are how artists get started playing music; can’t live without them. I want to talk about some advise using cover songs for upcoming artists. There has been an ongoing trend with bands who want to be famous, more popular, and who want to draw more attention to themselves by covering songs. Take The Ataris for example. They did a cover of Don Henley’s “Boys of Summer” with this music video:

This catapulted them to stardom and let the industry know who they were. Here’s a list of more examples:

Seven Story Fall – Akon “Right Now”

Disco Curtis – Lady GaGa “Just Dance”

The Maine – Def Leppard “Pour Some Sugar On Me”

There for Tomorrow – Omarion “Ice Box”

That’s just to name a few. My point is to let artists/bands know that doing a cover song is a great idea. Especially if you do it well, you will see a dramatic increase in your fans and traffic to your websites. The trick is to make it your own but close enough to the original that people will be able to distinguish what cover it is but that someone else made a cover of it. Also, you will need to spend some quality time picking which song to do. You want something out of the ordinary according to your genre and something tasteful that all can enjoy.

Good luck!
