I was on YouTube the other day and I’m not even sure how I got to this video, which can happen a lot, but it was very surprising and I wanted to share it. I thought I had come upon gold because I didn’t know about this video before. I believe it is an old video but not a lot of people or the main media sites have touched on it, but I could be wrong.
To start out, I want to say back when Britney Spears was signed I always said that she wasn’t a great singer like her competition Christina Aguilera. However, I knew she would do better in revenue and sales because she was marketed towards more of her act and not her singing. I thought of Britney as a short-term career but more profit and Christina as a long-term career with better singing capabilities.
There are people out there that like to say that this video doesn’t do justice because she is dancing around, but Usher and Christina do it at their shows; they are able to dance and sing great. Britney Spears has no excuse for this and her management and label just want the most amount of revenue they can get out of her, so they made her “concert” a ‘show’ instead. She might as well move to Vegas and “sing” with Celine Dion because she does the same things.
Britney had real talent in the early days before she was signed and for a good year after she was signed. Then all of that went downhill when the record label and management thought, “why make her sing?”. Concert-goers need to think about her shows because what you are really seeing is everything but hearing her real singing voice. Yes, she turns on her mic once in a while during the concert to say a few words, but the “show” isn’t really a concert, is it?
I think through all of the family crisis, paparazzi, controversies, life changes and battles, she has changed and so has her voice. She has admitted in an interview that she doesn’t even like her voice; she thinks it is okay and wishes she had a voice like Christina. With that knowledge in my head, I wouldn’t go see her “concert”.
So here is the video I found. Maybe you’ve seen it, maybe not. I think this poses a lot of questions about the music industry itself as in what value do concerts have, mostly pop, if there is no actual singing talent going on?
