File-sharing: A cyber witch-hunt?

by Mary Stokes on November 13, 2009

Opening up this month’s edition of Word, I was greeted, amongst other snippets of ‘Intelligent Life on Planet Rock‘ by a four-page spread entitled ‘Live at the Witch Trials’, which outlined the  furor over Lily Allen’s support of the 3-strike rule with regards file-sharing. Discussing her blog post from almost every angle the article questions the intrinsic hypocrisy of the debate, but also berates the Internet for spawning the merciless barrage of forums. blogs and messages which popped up in the wake of her editorial piece.

Next week, once I’ve had an opportunity to properly assess the article, corroborate information and re-acquaint myself with the story, I hope to explore the issue further. (The magazine only arrived yesterday).

I know this may smack of flogging a dead horse and adding to the cyber drivel that is clogging up the Information Highway, but file-sharing/ piracy – call it what you will – is the scapegoat of the moment for the decline in music sales. And the debate is prompting some government leaders to suggest Draconian measures in order to ‘save’ an industry. So if you’ll bare with me, I’ll try not to repeat Jillian too much and I’ll keep ranting down to a minimum.

But I’d really appreciate any insight you have, since this issue does affect us all in one way or another.
